It is the size that the manufacturer states in 1,000,000,000,000 byte units. Too bad so many people don't know of the difference between 2^40 and 10^12. Do they know that they can't address all of the storage directly using a standard operating system? Do they realize that they also lose space to formatting? They should use it raw so as to use every last byte.

I have had limited trouble with WD in the past, only one drive crashing. The return service was great - I didn't have to go through the retailer. Whether or not this drive will need to be replaced, I do not know as I have only had it for about a month now. It works fine now, but the long term is the true test. The good thing is that if there is a problem, I know that it is easy to return for a replacement.

Bought this drive for an external SATA Raid enclosure for backups only. Even though it's a 5400RPM drive, it is still very fast with a xfer rate of 50-55MB/sec on average. I will eventually buy 3 more to fill my 4 TB RAID enclosure. No problems so far. I paid about $135 for the drive.

The 1TB storage size is never 1TB, it is about 97x GB. Anyway, a good replacement of my almost full 200 GB HD.

The drive included in this kit is a WD10EACS Western Digital "Green Power" drive which retails anywhere for $150 to $250 online. So if you can get this on sale for less than $150, you should jump on it. The WD10EACS has had a great track record for reliability, staying cool, and being very quiet. I didn't bother with using anything else in the kit so I can't tell you about the backup software or the cables...except the CD looks pretty sketchy. It looks like someone burned a copy on their home machine. All in all EXCELLENT value.

I'm using two of these drives in a home server and they work very well. They run quick, quiet, cool, and are less power-hungry than my old 4-drive raid. I have never had any issues with Western Digital products.

Got this item on sale over labor day weekend and it was a great buy for the price ($129.99)! It has performed beautifully and I am using it to replace a 500gb sata drive in an external enclosure w/o problems. I use it for backing up images of our home computers, as well as, storing home-made videos and pictures. Eventhough it has a 16mb cache buffer instead of a preferred 32mb, transfer time between the PC and the external USB device is a lot better than an external PATA USB device. Delivery time from Buy.com was excellent, as well - I got the drive within 3 days of ordering it. Not bad for FREE ground shipment!

I agree with others. In the past WD's I've had had issues. In the past 8 months I have been buying WD SATAs and have been very satisfied. This is the least expensive 1TB I have found so far I have 2 of these models running great.

I bought this drive (actually a WD Caviar® Green™ drive) at $129, which is a fantastic deal for the capacity. While not the fastest drive available, it performs admirably in my 1st gen PowerMac G5 as a Time Machine backup hard drive. It's perfectly suited to backup duties.<br> <br> I also found it convenient that it has a physical jumper to set operation to 1.5Gbps mode. This is important for older motherboards (and earlier PowerMac G5s) that do not support 3.0Gbps SATA mode. By comparision, for my Samsung F1 drive I had to switch it from 3.0Gpbs mode to 1.5Gpbs mode by using a DOS utility. What a pain! <br><br> <b>Pros:</b><br> • Large capacity (and a great price at the time of purchase).<br> • Low power, runs quiet and cool.<br> • Has a physical jumper to set operating mode if necessary.<br> • Comes with SATA cable and Molex to SATA power adapter.<br> • Comes with a backup software CD (which I didn't use since it's Windows only) <br><br> <b>Cons:</b><br> • Not the fastest drive available (it's no Samsung F1 but I still found performance to be pretty good).

In the past WD has run hot and has come with many issues, but this drive has yet to disappoint. Good buy for the average user who just can't seem to delete anything =).

I waited a bit to write a review and so far there are no problems whatsoever. This is being used to share files in a home network and performs flawlessly. It's a "green" drive and it's quieter and cooler than others (about 4-8 degrees C less). Large drives tend to run hot- all the more reason to find cooler drives. If you need blazing speed, get a 7200rpm drive and deal with the heat. Everyone else will be pleasantly satisfied.

I waited to write my review for a couple of months, just to make sure I didn't have any problems. I purchased the drive on sale, and it arrived to my house in great shape. I was slightly nervous with the packaging, but I had no problems with the drive. I am using the drive in an external case, and it has no problems. I use this as a media drive, with a home network of Macs and PCs, and it has no problems.

Purchased two of these for external eSATA cases. The drives run reasonably fast, are so quiet you can't hear that they are on, and create almost no heat inside the external case - nice TB drive

The unit was defective upon arrival (SMART access errors). WD customer support blows (calls for the first 30 days are free thereafter $15 a pop). This is my first time purchasing a HD for backup purposes so I can't recommend other products.

Overall, WD has once again produced a very solid product at a respectable price. With the price of so many other components (including HDDs) dropping so significantly, it was a bit hard to drop $180 on this drive; at the same time, for the quality you get with WD (and for 1TB), the price seemed fair. The installation was quick and straighforward. Only negative on the installation is that the included connecting cable is just a bit too short in my Dell Optiplex to run it through the wire harnesses, so I had to leave it dangling free inside the case. Great performance/speed on file copies!

Got this thing for under 200 bux. Been working fine for my WHS. I have to complement Buy.com. FedEx said they put the package at my front door, but I never actually received it. It took Buy.com 3 days to reissue the replacement and expedite shipping too.

Ordered two of these to use in Thecus N2100. The disks seem to be quieter and running cooler than Samsung HD753LJ. The drives shipped were WD 1TB green drives with 3 year warranty from WD. Pretty happy with the purchase. As my main objective was creating an energy efficient system, I'm quite happy with the item.

I picked up two of these when they were first listed at around $180 ea, which at the time was $50+ less than anyone else selling a 1TB drive. They are Western Digital's WD10EACS drives, which are very quiet drives. I now have four and I'm very pleased with them. What made this a good deal at the time was not only did you get a great price on the drive but you also got a SATA cable and a molex to dual sata power adapter. Ditch the software (unless you're actually buying this for a backup solution) and use the drive for media storage.

Love the drive. I use it for archiving so speed is not an issue, but it doesn't feel slow for any reasonable use either. Lots of space. Saving electricity is a plus too. Reliability of WD drives can't be beat. Have been buying WD for the past 8 years and not a single failure. Highly recommend this brand and this drive in particular.

The drive was easy to install, and provides a significant amount of storage. What surprised me, as with most other hard drive purchases when you order a specific capacity you generally lose 12-18% of the capacity rating. This particular drive was spec'd at 1TB and when I installed it and viewed the available storage capacity, it was a whopping 946MB. Only 5.3% off the labeled rating!!! Very Nicesh!!! Keep in mind with the access speed, this drive really wasn't made for streaming... merely storage.

This drive is actually a Western Digital WD10EACS GreenPower drive. It comes with a full 3-year WD warranty, verified on their website. I got this drive when it was on sale for $190 with free shipping, which was a good deal at the time. Now the price has gone up on buy.com, and you can find the same drive for around $200 elsewhere. So far I have had no problems. I threw it into an Antec SATA enclosure and it's running wonderfully. It is *extremely* quiet! Even when it's working, I can't hear it at all, only the enclosure's fan. The "Full Feature Backup Software" it comes with is a bit sketchy. In the box was a standard, retail Imation CD-R with a white "Regen Backup Software" label on it. I have no idea if there is a real license for this software, whether it is freeware, or what. I didn't even bother opening it since I only use Linux, but I found it very amusing! If this drive ever goes on sale again, I would certainly recommend it.

Large size. Relatively cheap (bought at approx. 200USD tax and shipping included). Very quiet. Not the fastest due to its Green Power capabilities. But thats the point of this drive. Being Green is not free. 3 year warranty is not up to Seagate's 5 year warranty but its good enough.
