Patterson debuts his new series that introduces the Women's Murder Club. A demented killer stalks and murders newlyweds in San Francisco. Four women--a police detective, an assistant D.A., a reporter, and a medical examiner--join forces as they sidestep their bosses to track down a criminal whose twisted imagination stuns an entire city.

Annotation:
Introducing the Women's Murder Club--a quartet of San Francisco women who have teamed up to apprehend the city's most terrifying serial killer. They are, in no particular order: a journalist; a medical examiner; an assistant DA; and SFPD detective Lindsay Boxer, this new series's tormented heroine. In FIRST TO DIE, the club is on the trail of a murderer who kills couples on their wedding nights and sexually molests the brides' corpses.

Praise
Chicago Tribune
"1ST TO DIE follows the Patterson formula for success: short chapters, likable characters and graphic violence. This one has screenplay written all over it, but it delivers a sharp punch." - Chris Petrakos 04/07/2001

Entertainment Weekly
"This creeped-out murder mystery...features a fairly clever plot with enough last-minute revelations to keep you guessing (or at least, going)..." - Daneet Steffens 04/06/2001

Author Bio
James Patterson
James Patterson grew up in Newburgh, New York, 50 miles north of New York City. Valedictorian of his class at the Christian Brothers school, St. Patrick's, in 1965, Patterson graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in English. He first entertained the idea of becoming a writer in 1971 when he worked as a college student in a mental institution, a job that afforded him abundant time to read. He came up with the idea for his first novel during that time, and five years later, after 26 rejection slips, his first effort, "The Thomas Berryman Number", appeared in bookstores. Since that time, Patterson has written numerous best-selling thrillers featuring the sensitive, modern-day hero Alex Cross, including "Kiss the Girls", which was made into a major motion picture starring Morgan Freeman.

Prologue

INSPECTOR LINDSAY BOXER

IT IS AN UNUSUALLY WARM NIGHT in July, but I'm shivering badly as I stand on the substantial gray stone terrace outside my apartment. I'm looking out over glorious San Francisco and I have my service revolver pressed against the side of my temple.

"Goddamn you, God!" I whisper. Quite a sentiment, but appropriate and just, I think.

I hear Sweet Martha whimpering. I turn and see she is watching me through the glass doors that lead to the terrace. She knows that something is wrong. "It's okay," I call to her through the door. "I'm okay. Go lie down, girl."

Martha won't leave, though, won't look away. She's a good, loyal friend who's been nuzzling me good-night every single night for the past six years.

As I stare into the Border collie's eyes, I think that maybe I should go inside and call the girls. Claire, Cindy, and Jill would be here almost before I hung up the phone. They would hold me, hug me, say al

5 of 5 Excellent!!--A must read Monday, June 24, 2002
A suspense/mystery lover from San Antonio, TX

Because I was hooked on Alex Cross, the detective from many of James Patterson's books, I was hesistant to read one of his books that did not have Cross in it. I was pleasantly surprised. 1st. to Die is excellent. I could not put it down. I cannot wait to read all the others based on the Womens Murder Club.
