Notes & Personnel Info | | 1920'S BLUES CLASSICS comes with a 2004 calendar of old blues art. | | As a bonus to accompany their annual calendar, Blues Images adds a disc of classic 1920s blues 78s to the package, and 2004's edition features tracks by Skip James ("22-20 Blues"), Blind Lemon Jefferson ("Rising High Water Blues"), Charley Patton ("Down the Dirt Road Blues"), and others. The calendar itself is a wonderful way to see the art and promotional techniques used to market country blues in the 1920s. ~ Steve Leggett | | This interesting collection brings together several different "schools" of country blues from the late '20s, featuring tracks from Blind Blake, Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Ma Rainey. Although subtitled "15 Classic Blues Songs from the 1920's," four of these sides -- Skip James' "22-20 Blues," Blind Willie McTell's "Death Cell Blues," Bumble Bee Slim's "Rough Rugged Road," and Son House's "Dry Spell Blues" -- were actually recorded in the early '30s, which doesn't mean they don't fit well in this sequence, but it is a little bothersome if you're a stickler for detail. Too short to be anything more than an introduction to the world of early country blues, Down the Dirt Road Blues nevertheless has a stellar track listing. ~ Steve Leggett |
