| | | Features: Director's Cut, DVD, Widescreen, Aspect Ratio 2.35:1, Dolby Digital (5.1), English, French, Subtitled Based on the award-winning Broadway production, 1776 is a delightful musical celebration of the founding of the United States of America. The story centers around the familiar historical characters as they organize a movement for independence from Mother England: the tough, unyielding John Adams (William Daniels), the charming and pragmatic Benjamin Franklin (Howard Da Silva), the brilliant young Thomas Jefferson (Ken Howard), who is chosen to write the Declaration of Independence even as he longs for the company of his new bride Martha (Blythe Danner), and the rest of the Continental Congress. All events lead up to that most significant date: July 4, 1776, when the Declaration was signed. Wonderful songs combined with history make this excellent family viewing. "...unique musical..." Editor's Note
This acclaimed film version of Peter Stone's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, which was one of the last big-budget studio musicals, stars William Daniels (TV's Saint Elsewhere) as John Adams and Howard Da Silva as Ben Franklin. A rollicking, anachronistic treatment of the creation of the Declaration of Independence, with the American forefathers conducting themselves with uncharacterstic--and comical--indignity. Academy Award Nominations: Best Cinematography (Harry Stradling, Jr.)

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Well made movie and a great history lesson! Saturday, May 25, 2002 Andy Martinez from Tyler Tx
I had the pleasure and honor of playing Edward Rutledge from South Carolina in a local stage production of 1776. I had NO idea of the education I was going to get! I learned more about the formation of our country and the development of the Declaration of Independence from this movie than I did from school.
The movie is well made, the characters are well played, the music is incredible! The major scene for Rutledge, which is preceded by a confrontation with Adams and, especially Jefferson, is dark and very moving. I still get chills when I remember it! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Inspirational, Well Performed, Moving Score Wednesday, May 01, 2002 Mark James from Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
This is a surprising musical, I was expecting a boring lackluster movie using the Declaration of Independance as a backdrop. Instead, I found a well-written (book and score), well acted, well directed film that was moving (sometimes funny) that showed some of the issues and conflicts involved when brave men put their lives, fortunes and family in peril to declare a human state of freedom that the world had not seen. To stand up against a tyrant that would surely defeat their fledgling democracy. It was not a surprise this movie was made, only that it was made so well. Was this review helpful?
