| | | How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways. Features: DVD, Aspect Ratio 1.85:1, Dolby Digital (5.1) 10 Things I Hate About You tells the story of high school newcomer Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his pursuit of the girl of his dreams, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik). Unfortunately, strict rules in the Stratford household forbid Bianca from having a boyfriend until her older, ill-tempered sister Kat (Julia Stiles) has one of her own--a highly unlikely scenario given that Kat is considered a social outcast. Desperately hoping for a date with Bianca, Cameron hatches a scheme to find a male match for Kat--the likely candidate, Patrick (Heath Ledger)--a sullen and mysterious young man. Yet mating confusion ensues when Patrick accepts a bribe to win over Kat from Bianca's wannabe boyfriend Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) in order to make way for Bianca to begin dating. "Funny!" Los Angeles Times "Devilishly entertaining!" Rolling Stone
 Editor's Note
The story of high school newcomer Cameron James, and his pursuit of Bianca, the girl of his dreams. His plans are thwarted when he finds out he cannot date Bianca until her older sister, the social outcast Kat, has a boyfriend. A witty high school re-telling of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW.

| | Professional Reviews | Premiere "...[Its elements] swirl together happily..." 11/01/1999 p.133Entertainment Weekly "...Surprisingly well-acted..." -- Rating: B 10/08/1999 p.76 New York Times "...10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU has its charms, most notably Julia Stiles' brash, cheeky portrayal....She is a breath of fresh air..." 03/31/1999 p.E11 Box Office "...An enjoyable, good old-fashioned modernized love story..." 06/01/1999 p.70 Los Angeles Times "...As satirical as it is romantic, this is one teen film that is wise enough to span generations in its appeal....10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU is slick and brisk..." 03/31/1999 p.F1 Chicago Sun-Times "...The movie is charming....[The music] is subtle and inventive while still cheerful..." 03/31/1999 p.49 Chicago Sun-Times 0 of 10 10 Things I Hate About You is inspired, in a sortuva kinduva way, by Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, in the same sense that Starship Troopers was inspired by Titus Andronicus. It doesn't remake Shakespeare so much as evoke him as a talisman, by setting its story at Padua High School, naming its characters Stratford and Verona, making one of the heroines a shrew, etc. There is even a scene where the shrew is assigned to rewrite a Shakespeare sonnet... I think we simply have to dump the entire plot and appreciate the performances and some of the jolliest scenes. I liked the spirit of the high school teachers. Allison Janney is the sex-mad counselor, and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell is the English teacher who performs Shakespeare's sonnets as if they were rap lyrics. I also liked the sweet, tentative feeling between Ledger and Stiles. He has a scene that brings the whole movie to an enjoyable halt. Trying to win her heart, he waits until she's on the athletic field, and then sings "I love you baby" over the P.A. system, having bribed the school's marching band to accompany him... I liked the movie's spirit... The music, much of it by the band Letters to Cleo, is subtle and inventive while still cheerful. The movie almost but not quite achieves liftoff against the gravitational pull of the tired story formula. Sometimes it's a mistake to have acting this charming; the characters become so engaging and spontaneous, we notice how they're trapped in the plot. - Roger Ebert Boxoffice Magazine 0 of 10 Coming off the heels of the recently released Cruel Intentions, a teenage version of Choderlos de Laclos' Dangerous Liaisons, 10 Things I Hate About You offers up its own modernized high school-set rendering of a classic, this time with Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew... Largely buoyed by the well-rounded performances of Stiles and Ledger, 10 Things I Hate About You has potential appeal for audiences beyond its target teen market. [Julia] Stiles' Kat is a multifaceted and contentious heroine who simultaneously exudes charm and fierceness through her sworn devotion to remaining an individual and never following the crowd. [Heath] Ledger's Patrick is similarly pleasing, bringing a freshness to the tried-and-true rebellious character who really has a poetic soul and is simply misunderstood. The chemistry between these two headstrong personalities is without a doubt the most compelling aspect of the movie...10 Things I Hate About You is overall an enjoyable, good old...fashioned modernized love story. - Francesca Dinglasan

A surprisingly good movie. I am not hating on Heath Ledger or Julia Stiles, but my first impression of the "10 Things.." cast was somewhat similar to American Pie's. Good at reading their lines, funny dialogue and plot, but no real chemistry.
The "10 Things..." cast wont win any academy awards, but they add immensely to the movie. They keep you interested and make the tired teen flick cliches seem interesting. There are some spins on the plot that everyone has seen before that make it fresh.
If you want a 5 star teen flick watch Cameron Crowe's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" but as teen movies go, this is among the best ones. Was this review helpful?

This was a wonderful movie. If you like Heath Ledger, you must see this movie. When he sings, he melts your heart. The acting and story was great. I highly recommend this wonderful movie. It is romantic in some ways, and truthful in others for high school kids. I am an adult and mother to three and loved this movie. Was this review helpful?

This is a great movie. I love it a lot. It has a good meaning. It means some people may be cold and cruel but inside they have a reason but when they come out they can be so kind. This is a great movie to watch with your friends or boyfriend/girlfriend. Everyone should watch it at least once. I love this movie so much. I can't wait to have enough to buy it!!! I went to the movies and saw it so many times. I LOVE IT!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 shakespeare would be proud Tuesday, January 18, 2000 hybridspecies@earthlink.net from whittier, ca
Director Gil Junger has re-created a masterpiece. Every scene is enthusiastic and transitions seemlessly into the next without losing an ounce of fun. There is no fat here, only the lean muscle of a well exercised comedy. The humor is serious and the cast is as exquisite in its ability to act as it is young and fresh. Julia Stiles and Larisa Oleynik are the perfect sisters and every line they utter is delivered with utmost intesity and sincerity. Every gesture is natural a |
