Tool's sophisticated art-metal approach (some regard them as prog-metal) is marked by unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. The band's use of serpentine, syncopated rhythms, and tight staccato guitar riffs topped by singer Maynard James Keenan's passionate-but-controlled vocal style separates Tool from the slash-and-burn overkill approach of so many of their heavy rock contemporaries. The band first came to public attention in the waning days of the grunge boom, but have long outlasted that transient era with their dark, brooding vision.

To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's most consummate mainstream perfectionists, revitalizing progressive rock to the grandeur of its '70s heyday, but updated with technocratic tension and existential dread not known to previous generations. Perhaps it's the development of more musical genres at the turn of the millennium, but it's also Tool's ability to take what is needed from each and leave the florid excesses behind, forming a seething gray core of angst and release across epic-length songs that are as accessible as they are complex. The material on 10,000 DAYS provides typically thought-provoking grist for the band's lyrical handwringing ("Vicarious" tackles reality television as the bane of culture; "Wings for Marie" is a two-part suite on the death of vocalist Maynard James Keenan's mother), and is as musically engaging as ever, finding the band at their most powerful since 1996's AENIMA.

5 of 5 Unexpected awsome graphic cd case! Tuesday, February 26, 2008
Amado Castaneda from Las Vegas, NV

Includes a "stereotypical" 3d graphical cd case with glasses to combine mirrored/halved similar/twined images into one 'crossed-eye' pop-at-face art. Worth the money just for that! Anyways, the music was great and semi-cleaner/religious in my opinion, good! My friend didn't like it as much as the ones before, but I love it! I'll keep sticking up for the guys, they sound serious.

5 of 5 Awesome Tuesday, May 02, 2006
Casey from Lovell, Wy
I thought this album was utterly perfect, exept for the fact that there weren't enough vocals for my tastes. I mean, Maynard has an awesome voice, he just usually doesn't use it enough.

4 of 5 good, but not great (for TOOL) Monday, May 01, 2006
dave from Toledo, Ohio
Tool reenters the world of rock with their fifth studio release. Overall it's excellent compared to most of today's rock, but for TOOL it's a bit of let down after five years. Lots of filler, that's all there is to say; lots of filler. There are some extremely quality songs on this disc, however, TOOL seems to continue the trend of Lateralus with a ton of unecessary trance noise. To each their own, I guess. While this is how TOOL wanted it to be, and my opinion means very little, I think there is way too much meditative music on this album. When they hit their highs in Vicarious and The Pot, for example, they are unbelievable, however, there are only a few songs on this album that capture TOOL in their utmost form.

5 of 5 Excellent, long-awaited release Sunday, April 30, 2006
A Listener from new jersey
This cd plays like two separate ep's. A lot of it sounds like salival-era composition. Vicarious is good, but is by no means the best song on the cd. Jambi is hard, but rather forgettable (as tool songs go. Compared to everything else, it's excellent). Wings for marie and 10,000 days flow very well, like if parabol/parabola went straight into reflection (tracks from lateralus). The Pot reeks of hooker with a p**is, and is perhaps the most interesting song on the cd. The next two tracks are segue-type tracks into the second half of the cd. The three remaining music tracks aren't nearly as good as the first five, but they're still strong. Right in two sounds a lot like you lied (from salival).

all in all, this is not what you would expect, but it's still amazing.
