Oscar nominee Johnny Depp delivers "a tour de force performance" (Baz Bamigboye, The Daily Mail) in The Libertine. As the celebrated writer and bad boy John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester, Depp brings to life a decadent 17th century London. There, Wilmot falls passionately in love with his aspiring actress muse (Oscar nominee Samantha Morton), but is cast from the heights of privileged society when he scandalizes King Charles II (Oscar nominee John Malkovich) with a shockingly audacious play. At the depths of ruin, the rebel seeks redemption on his own terms. "Johnny Depp is brilliant," raves Cosmopolitan, while Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calls The Libertine a "one-of-a-kind spellbinder."

"Samantha Morton finds the soul in a woman who's hard as nails..."  Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader
"An interesting film, and a good one, with a harrowing performance by Depp..."  Melissa Levine, Dallas Observer
"Johnny Depp is a wonder, A one-of-a-kind spellbinder..."  Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"Johnny Depp makes a riveting antihero..."  Sheri Linden, Dallas Observer

Editor's Note

IN THEATERS NOVEMBER 25, 2005

In the mid-1600s, the randy John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester (Johnny Depp), romances actress Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton) and writes a play that mocks Charles II (John Malkovitch). The problem? The Restoration ruler was the one who commissioned the play, and now Wilmot's in hot water.

Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "This one-of-a-kind spellbinder from first-time director Laurence Dunmore is not afraid to shock. Depp is a raunchy wonder..." 12/01/2005 p.136

Total Film
"Laurence Dunmore's debut is stylish and murky, with Depp's charming rogue lighting up the gloom." 07/01/2006 p.128

Entertainment Weekly
"A must for fans of Depp and overreaching period cinema..." 06/30/2006 p.144

Variety.com 7 of 10
"From the outset, ""The Libertine"" throws down the gauntlet, with Johnny Depp's Earl of Rochester promising the audience, ""You will not like me."" After almost two hours watching the 17th-century poetaster ruin himself with booze, brawling, shagging and epic-scale petulance, no one can say they weren't warned. Starting out seductive but ending up tiresome, debuting director Laurence Dunmore's pic is an honorable misfire..." - Leslie Felperin

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
"I admire Depp's performance, which plays fair with his opening comment and contains nothing that would inspire us to like him. I was engaged by the patience of Charles II, played by Malkovich as a man smart enough to prefer amusement to flattery; when he cautions Rochester to dial down, it isn't that he's personally offended, but that it's a bad idea for the king to be seen giving license to offense. Samantha Morton's character bewitches Rochester by out-thinking him, which he finds more intriguing than any sexual favor." - Roger Ebert
