The Twilight Brigade continues its search for the Virus Cores, mysterious items not included in the official game specs. They believe they need to collect them before they can find the coveted Key of the Twilight. Meanwhile, their rival Guild, TaN, pressures them even harder using their secret service led by a dangerous Player Killer Ender.

Haseo has an idea on how to use the Virus Cores in one of the Lost Grounds. As their leader Ovan decides to take action, even Gord and Bset, who left the guild in disappointment, join them again to fight against the enemy warriors.

Editor's Note

This anime series in the .hack// universe is set in the near future after a fire wipes out a game played by millions. With all the information about "The World" lost, a new version of the game surfaces: "The World R:2." As people join the game, they learn that it's not like "The World" they remember, but it still strains the boundary between game and reality. .HACK//ROOTS centers on Haseo, a new player who finds "The World R:2" is more than just a game. In the second volume, the Twilight Brigade is still hunting for elements that aren't mentioned in the game's design manual, but their search is in danger as their enemies draw closer.

5 of 5 In a category of its own. Tuesday, June 19, 2007

For anyone that thinks anime is for overgrown kids, this is a counter-example. To begin with, the music from ALI Project is nothing short of amazing. It varies from techno arrangements of Mozart's Der Holle Rache to ragtime. All the characters are playing in the virtual reality/massive multi-player role playing game. But there is something odd about this game. There seems to be some blurring between the real world and the game world. In addition the game is sometimes not under the control of the system administrators. The story revolves around trying to find the mythical Key of the Twilight. Each of the main characters has a very distinct and unique personality and the interplay between them keeps the story moving. Don't expect constant action sequences but do expect to think about the story while you are stuck humming some of the tunes that are played throughout the series. I also recommend you get the Volume 1 collectors edition which includes the soundtrack disk.
