Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd have made some bad movies in their day, but Trading Places is one of their respective bests.
Now legendary, the film has been referenced and homaged to an extent matched by few other recent films. It's a classic story: Greedy Phildadelphia commodity brokers Randolph and Mortimer Duke (the inimatable Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) bet the sum of $1 on a "scientific experiment," namely that they can depose their successful managing director Louis (Aykroyd) and replace him with a common street bum named Valentine (Murphy).

McNamara - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 1/21/2008 11:06 PM | | In his latest film, Sunshine, Boyle channels the energy and wonder of classics like Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey -- all the while keeping his feet firmly planted in his own highly original science fiction creation. It's a true testament to Boyle as a filmmaker that he's able to capture the same sheer vastness of space and time as Kubrick and Scott without ripping them off, but he accomplishes it flawlessly read the full review

With strong performances by Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, Jamie Foxx, and others, there is little doubt as to why it was nominated for so many acting awards. I must state though, as has been stated elsewhere, that Jennifer Hudsons role was not really a supporting one as much as a lead. read the full review

Essentially, Norbit mirrors Nutty as it once again showcases Murphy and Baker's incomparable skills at turning Murphy into a fat guy (or gal). A sensitive, sympathetic wallflower (played by Murphy) must find the strength to stand up to a grotesque counterpart (also played by Murphy) so that he can fulfill a destiny and be with the picture-perfect princess of his dreams here, Thandie Newton assumes the always-underwritten love interest role that belonged to Jada Pinkett Smith and Janet Jackson in Professor parts one and two.

As played by Matthew Rhys, who certainly looks the part, Thomas is a caddish drunk whose tongue can cast the most elegant of wit at will. He trades lacerations with his equally inebriated wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller) and harbors some deep yearnings for his childhood friend Vera (Keira Knightley) but can only find work writing agitprop screenplays for the government. Not satisfied by a simple love triangle, screenwriter Sharman Macdonald adds another cog to the drama by introducing William Killick (Cillian Murphy), a soldier who woos, marries, and impregnates Vera before he goes off to fight ze Germans. read the full review

In 1988, with his stock trading at an all-time high, Eddie Murphy outdid even himself with Coming to America. In the wake of a triptych of movies (The Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop II, and the standup flick Eddie Murphy: Raw) hated by critics but consumed voraciously by his expanding audience, Murphy ditched the vulgar street-smart routine for African royalty and New York romance. And Coming to America became Murphy's biggest hit at the time in spite of pure, unadulterated wholesomeness. read the full review

When Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) pulls off his helmet to reveal a hairnet in the first minute of Shrek 2, its clear the sequel intends to match the wit and style of its predecessor. Fortunately it succeeds, finding new targets for its fairy-tale bashing humor. The result is the kind of summer escapism you dont need to lower your expectations to enjoy. read the full review
