Director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin made two exceedingly smart choices in adapting George Crile's book Charlie Wilson's War. First, they consented to a brisk 95-minute running time, rather than fall prey to the "prestige" mentality that can saddle such projects, and that bloats them out to beyond two hours. The other choice was leavening their material with a snappy, devil-may-care attitude -- a sure-fire strategy to skim over their story's weakest areas of story and character development.
Charlie Wilson's War is entertaining, and that's about the extent of it. read the full review

Enchanted April | | | Starring: Miranda Richardson Director: Mike Newell | | Format: DVD Release Date: 5/5/2009 | | Enchanted April - DVD Review By: Ed Perkis - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 5/3/2009 12:40 AM | | A sort of kooky spirituality hovers over Enchanted April. Not the annoying kind of kooky spirituality, but a light "presence" of something that releases the cares of 1920's English housefraus and helps solve bad marriages and overall grumpiness. The "presence" resides in Italy where four women escape the rain and dreariness of their lackluster London lives and spend one month in a castle. The four women, relative strangers in post WWI England, include Lottie (Josie Lawrence) and Rose (Miranda Richardson), women who are clearly unhappy with their husbands and their drab lives in general. read the full review

A classic that deserves its iconic status, The Graduate is the cinematic equivalent of the Simon and Garfunkel songs that make up the soundtrack -- gently subversive, wistful, not explicitly political but still very much part of the countercultural '60s. The film is saved from being a one-sided attack on suburbia (so influential on subsequent treatments like American Beauty) by its humor and the humanity of its characters. read the full review

| | 44. Idiocracy coming soon! | | | Starring: Luke Wilson Dax Shepard Director: Mike Judge | | Format: DVD Release Date: 7/14/2009 | User Rating: 5 | | Idiocracy - DVD By: Margaret Williams - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 1/22/2007 10:55 PM | | Idiocracy has a lot to offer as far as social commentary goes and Mike Judge keeps up his opinion without pausing to worry about what others will think. That's what makes him so good. But, unlike his other film and the lasting effect of Office Space and its cast of characters, Idiocracy won't be so loved and memorable. It's a good film for the time that it is running, but after the movie is over, it is not so endearing. Idiocracy is definitely a film to watch, but not necessarily a DVD to buy. read the full review | |
