I'm serious: the people responsible for this movie actually took their high-concept idea (movie code phrase for "tiny plot") and made the best movie they could. Not once does it seem like they ever deluded themselves into thinking they were generating high art. read the full review

Jumper (Blu-ray) new! | | | Starring: Hayden Christensen Jamie Bell Director: Doug Liman | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 9/30/2008 | | Video Reviews Available: 1 | | Jumper - Blu-Ray Movie By: Ed Perkis - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 6/14/2008 5:55 PM | | It would be easy to blame most of the tedium in Jumper on star Hayden Christensen, who transfers the wooden acting/blank facial expressions he picked up on the last two Star Wars movies to his role of David Rice. Christensen's non-acting certainly doesn't help, but he looks positively charismatic next to the truly terrible Rachel Bilson (The O.C.), playing David's girlfriend/damsel in distress, Millie Harris. The plot, dialogue, and pacing also do their part in killing the possibilities inherent in the premise. read the full review

Die Hard. This time, it's personal. To make the long and extremely silly plotline of Die Hard With a Vengeance short, it breaks down like this. John McClane (Bruce Willis) is back in New York City where he's separated from his wife. The brother of Hans Gruber, from the original Die Hard, is out to get McClane and make some cash for himself in the process, bringing a pack of East German stooges with him to cause trouble. Add to this the character Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson), a Harlem shop owner, who becomes McClane's unlikely sidekick, and a whole lotta bombs exploding all over the city, and what do you get? Well, I still haven't figured that out. read the full review

When I saw the poster for Craig Brewers (Hustle & Flow) drama Black Snake Moan, with a scantily clad Christina Ricci being held in chains by Samuel L. Jackson, I had little desire to see the picture. The tagline, Everything is hotter down south, made me think of some sort of trashy exploitation flick with better actors than usual. Instead, Black Snake Moan turned out to be a flawed character study about abuse, redemption, and the power of the blues. read the full review

You do not have to read the original short story "1408," part of the longer anthology Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales, to know that the central idea comes from author Stephen King. In fact, one must assume that the movie was pitched in production meetings as "The Shining in New York." And while it's true that this cinematic take on "1408" recycles so many narrative strings tied to King's overall body of work, it somehow modifies them into a surprisingly fresh, tight and effective thriller. Renowned travel writer Mike Enslin (John Cusack), like most characters in King's ouvere, is haunted by his own demons. read the full review
