Israeli-born writer/director Rod Lurie (The Contender) delivers a sense of verit to a taut political thriller that has all the earmarks of having been based on the real case that inspired it -- the purposeful exposure of Valerie Plame Wilson's covert identity as a CIA Operations Officer by the Bush-Cheney administration. That tragic and possibly treasonous "get-even" act by the 2003 White House provides Lurie's fictional tale an unequivocal basis of credibility. read the full review

| | 19. Manchurian Candidate (Special Edition) | | | Starring: Frank Sinatra Janet Leigh Director: John Frankenheimer | | Format: DVD Release Date: 5/12/2009 | | The Manchurian Candidate (1962) - DVD Review By: Christopher Null - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 7/13/2007 8:07 PM | |
Possibly John Frankenheimer's finest film, The Manchurian Candidate speaks to the Red Scare, the horrors of war, paranoid fears of brainwashing -- all tied in with the game of Solitaire. Frankenheimer owes a lot to George Axelrod's script and Richard Condon's gripping novel, which tells the story of a perfectly brainwashed soldier (during the Korean War), played by Laurence Harvey, who becomes a no-remorse assassin after capture and brianwashing by the enemy. His target and handler are both kept as mysteries until the end, but it's Frank Sinatra as an old war buddy who's suffering terrible nightmares that brings it all to light. read the full review

Behind the Mask-Rise of Leslie Vernon | | | Starring: Angela Goethals Nathan Baesel Director: Scott Glosserman | | Format: DVD Release Date: 9/30/2008 | | Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - DVD Review By: Christopher Null - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 6/23/2007 12:35 AM
The mockumentary genre seems limitless these days. Why not give it a run at the serial killer world in Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon?
Truth be told, a serial killer mockumentary has been done before and with great effect in Man Bites Dog. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a little more tongue-in-cheek than that modern classic, and it's a decently good time, too. As in Dog, here we have a camera crew following around murderer Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel). Only rather than in gritty reality, Leslie lives in a pseudo-real-pseudo-movie-world where Jason Voorhees and Freddy are actual people. read the full review
