McNamara - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 10/1/2008 8:12 PM | | Iron Man is a film that comic book junkies will no doubt love, but it also appeals to those who generally shy away from the superhero genre because it retains a relevance to the world we live in today. War, weapons and terrorism are all hot-button issues surging through the daily news, and Iron Man definitely has a contribution to make to that discussion. read the full review

Created by author and lawyer Erle Stanley Gardner, Mason first appeared in the 1933 novel The Case of the Velvet Claws and went on to appear in numerous novels and short stories. The character was the “King of All Media” before Howard Stern coined the term, appearing in films during the mid-‘30s, on a radio show from 1943-1955, in comic books, and about 18 months in a comic strip that began in October 1950. The most famous adaptation is the classic television drama that ran from 1957 to 1966, starring Raymond Burr who won an Emmy for his performance in the series’ fourth season. read the full review

There's something dead in Denzel Washington's eyes nearly all of the way through Ridley Scott's American Gangster, which takes what should have been a mesmerizing slice of urban historical grit and grinds it into roughly two hours of standard issue cinema. Washington is playing Frank Lucas, a real-life crime boss who for a period lasting from the late 1960s into the following decade, ran Manhattan "from 110th to 155th, river to river." A real slick character who doesn't need to strut his worth on the street, Lucas hates flash like a junkie hates rehab: It reminds him of all he truly is but doesn't want to be. read the full review

The way I see it, Martin Scorsese has one problem: He's in love with the sound of his own voice, as it comes out through the dialogue of films like GoodFellas and now, Casino. Clocking in at three long hours, Casino is an entertaining and engrossing film, but just drags a simple story into a sprawling, epic tale that desperately needs a little trimming.
Based on a true story, Casino is the tale of Sam Rothstein (Robert De Niro), the best of the old bookmakers, who is hand-picked by his mob bosses "Back Home" to go to Las Vegas to run the Tangiers Casino. read the full review
