If you thought the only real place for gravity-defying fight scenes was The Matrix, think again. One of todays most diverse directors, Ang Lee (Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm), has not only found the perfect venue for such combat the classic samurai movie but has injected his action with poetry and meaning. In Lees Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, stars like Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh gracefully zip through the air in this breathtaking Chinese fable about love, loyalty, and destiny.

I'll admit that the Civil War just isn't my choice of an afternoon. Between TNT's affinity of putting Gettysburg on every 4th of July and the love that multiple friends of mine seem to harbor for drawn out epics concerning the Civil War (either on film or in book), I just have gotten fairly sick and tired of seeing the Civil War on celluloid again and again. You pile on the fact that I had to change my phrasing to "the war of Northern aggression" whilst I was living in Raleigh, North Carolina and I just don't want to hear another thing for it. This said, you can see why Glory is a very special exception to my rule of antipathy towards war films with muskets in them. read the full review

Troy leaves the talking to its triumvirate of Hollywood royalty Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson, and Peter OToole. The dying is left up to the chiseled and marketable studs Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, and Brad Pitt. Whenever a member of the veteran trio interacts with a member of the other on screen, it creates a mismatch of talent not even a Trojan Horse could overcome.

A poet of the small gesture, Zhang Yimou moves on from his slice-of-life dramas Not One Less and Happy Times to the more broad, operatic strokes of Hero and The House of Flying Daggers. The resulting House is an astonishing work of cinematic beauty; filled with strong primary colors and evocative storybook forests of green bamboo or autumn leaves. The sound design is remarkable, staging a series of ritualistic combat scenes between policemen and assassins that are stunning in their brevity focusing the attention on the swish of cloth, the murmur of breath, or the rush of a cool breeze. read the full review

The stigma of "I've seen it all before" pervades Epic Movie in unexpected ways. Writers/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer's previous credits, Scary Movie (as two of six writers) and Date Movie, tell you what you're in for: the skewering of some currently popular cinematic genre. Famous scenes will be re-shot, famous people lampooned, and there will be plenty of naughty bits. Experience might also alert you to the film's questionable quality. read the full review
