Cleaner-First Season new! | | | Starring: Amy Price-Francis Kevin Michael Richardson | | Format: DVD Release Date: 6/9/2009 | | The Cleaner - The First Season - DVD Review By: Blake Matthews - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 6/24/2009 2:47 PM | | In The Cleaner on A&E, Benjamin Bratt stars as William Banks, a former drug addict who helps other addicts kick their addiction by any means necessary. Bratt’s portryal of Banks is loosely based on addiction counselor Warren Boyd. The first season had a 13-episode run in the summer of 2008, and will continue with a second 13-episode season later this month. When his daughter Lula was born, Banks made a promise to God he would get clean and get his life together. He has created a “cleaning service” with other former addicts, including Darnell (Kevin Michael Richardson), Swenton (Esteban Powell), and Akani (Grace Park, Battlestar Galactica). read the full review

Dukes of Hazzard-Complete 7th Season | | | Starring: Catherine Bach Tom Wopat | | Format: DVD Release Date: 12/5/2006 | | The Dukes of Hazzard - The Complete Seventh Season - DVD By: Chris Beaumont - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 1/11/2007 12:27 PM | | Here it is, the one all you Dukes fans have been waiting for -- the final season is here. Actually, I am surprised that it lasted seven years. I mean, I loved the show as a kid and in syndication, but it is kind of silly, and suffers from cookie cutter-style plotting. Still, Warner Bros. has done a nice job of delivering the final 17 episodes on six disks. The set is a little slim on the extras, but the episodes are rendered nicely. The season starts with one of the best episodes of the run, "Happy Birthday, General Lee." This episode flashes back eight years and recounts just how the 1969 Dodge Charger came to be in the possession of Dukes. read the full review

While I'm not about to go into spoiler territory and openly admit how this half of the season ends, it's sufficient enough to say that it's a paradigm shift that overshadows the revelation of the hidden Cylons, the brewing civil war, and all other dynamic changes the series has undergone. read the full review

| | 36. Transformers-Complete First Season 25th Anniversary Edition new! | | | | Format: DVD Release Date: 6/16/2009 | | Transformers: The Complete First Season (25th Anniversary Edition) - DVD Review By: The Masked Movie Snobs - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 6/29/2009 8:15 AM | | Where previous DVD releases left something to be desired (remastered picture, but art missing, characters with the wrong colors, bad audio, and other subtle changes), this collection restores the original broadcast masters, complete with commercial bumpers and next episode previews. While this occasionally leads to some “soft” animation, as the original masters were not of the same quality as the remastered ones, Shout! Factory has color corrected these masters and blended them with the restored masters to present Transformers in a way not seen since these episodes were first broadcast. In addition, the sound is superb, as new stereo masters have been created from the original audio. read the full review | |

Just like religion and the U.S. Constitution, science fiction has remained popular while losing much of its meaning. Sci fi has never been bigger than it is today, but unlike the fifties -- when even the lamest creature features carried "messages" about nuclear anxiety or the nobility of space exploration -- today's sci-fi movies and TV series don't have much to say. At best, they are action/drama series with intergalactic settings. The hugely successful Star Trek franchise has been part of that transition. read the full review

Most film adaptations of classic books are inferior to the books they are based on. This is partly because the written word allows more nuance than the camera, but also because great books don't always have enough plotting or action to make great movies, and film adaptations often overcompensate by rewriting the book in a quest to make it more cinematic. The most obvious recent example (speaking of quests) is The Lord of the Rings: Peter Jackson omitted key scenes, changed others, and generally jacked up Tolkien's fanatically-loved bestseller for no good reason. read the full review

Richly populated with a wide variety of unique characters, not to mention a serial killer and lots of sexy vampires, Bon Temps, Louisiana is a decidedly interesting place in which to spend some time. Alan Ball's True Blood may not quite measure up to the triumph of his Six Feet Under, but it's as good a series as any HBO has put on the air since The Sopranos ended, and it's well worth a renewal or two. Based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, True Blood drops us into the weird world of Sookie Stackhouse (the energetic Anna Paquin), a young waitress who has ability to hear people's thoughts, a talent that annoys the hell out of her. read the full review
