Stasiewski - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 6/25/2007 12:05 PM | | Dead Silence certainly isn’t the movie I expected from the director of Saw. It’s a solid, slightly more sophisticated horror film, one that I imagine director James Wan was thinking of making when he got his big break with the gruesome, albeit groundbreaking Saw. In fact, it was bold move, making a ghost story when hyper-graphic horror films are all the rage. read the full review

You do not have to read the original short story "1408," part of the longer anthology Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales, to know that the central idea comes from author Stephen King. In fact, one must assume that the movie was pitched in production meetings as "The Shining in New York." And while it's true that this cinematic take on "1408" recycles so many narrative strings tied to King's overall body of work, it somehow modifies them into a surprisingly fresh, tight and effective thriller. Renowned travel writer Mike Enslin (John Cusack), like most characters in King's ouvere, is haunted by his own demons. read the full review

This third and possibly final entry in the series stands up to its predecessors in both categories, though maybe not in the follow through. read the full review

The Saw films will doubtless continue and soon enough Saw IV will probably be relegated to the same blur with which I now see the other sequels. But for now it's the odd movie out -- as cheap and cheesy as its brethren, but oddly boring for long stretches. By now, these Saw characters have been having a very bad couple of murder-packed weeks. Maybe it would be best if the filmmakers skipped ahead and put this behind them.

Their popularity aside, these are hard films to enjoy. They are designed to fill the viewer up with the most primal tension of bodily dismemberment and then leave them hanging without catharsis. This is why the theme of Saw III is utter nonsense. Forgiveness' Maybe in real life we could learn a thing or two about the emptiness of revenge but in this loud, screeching video game meat grinder, everything is reduced to the lizard brain. KILL! CUT! SMASH! SURVIVE! DESTROY! read the full review

I can't say I remember what exactly happened in the first two Resident Evil movies, other than I watched them and didn't dislike them enough to take a pass on Resident Evil: Extinction, a potential trilogy capper or, more likely, part three of five or eight. This series, based on a popular videogame, is one of those second-tier franchises that, in a sneaky and undemanding way, can be more enjoyable than its classier counterparts. It's also the kind of franchise lacking the faux dignity to pretend that three is a magic number. Russell Mulcahy, the newest director in the fold, knows from exhaustible cult franchises, having made the original Highlander. read the full review

Sure the buildup can be fun, and even offer some nice thrills of its own, but there can be nothing but frustration if the accumulated pressure isn't released in a wholly satisfying way. When a twist sucks and is totally unearned, not only do you want a refund, but you also want back your emotional investment: "Who gives a s*** if she was the killer's daughter' I was here for two hours!" read the full review
