Eragon (Two-Disc Special Edition) - DVD
By: Edward Perkis - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews
Published on: 3/23/2007 8:00 PM
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to substitute the names Luke, Obi Wan, Leia, Han, and Darth Vader for those listed above and call Eragon a Jedi rather than a Dragon Rider. You have to wonder why George Lucas didn't immediately call his lawyers. Heck, even the joke about Vader killing off one of his commanders and then telling another fearful man "congratulations, you've been promoted" is ripped-off lock, stock and barrel in the film. What doesn't come out of the Lucas archives reeks of Tolkien. read the full review

Next - DVD Review
By: Rafe Telsch - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews
Published on: 9/26/2007 7:42 PM
In Next, Nicolas Cage plays a character who can see into the future and adjust what he's doing to change outcomes around. As Cris Johnson says: "Every time you look at [the future] it changes, because you looked at it." It's just a shame that Cage himself doesn't have the ability to avoid some of the bombs of his career. While Next isn't necessarily a career high for Cage, it is entertaining enough to make up for some of his shortcomings - say, to balance out his career for The Wicker Man. read the full review

Make sure everyone has their beverage of choice and is comfortably seated. Get the shiitake mushrooms ready while they enjoy this Gilligan's Island meets Lord of the Flies with fungus cinematic delight. Cloverfield - DVD Review
By: Sean O'Connell - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews
Published on: 4/21/2008 7:31 PM
We should have seen this coming. Team Cloverfield dropped more than enough hints suggesting they knew what they were doing, from the inspired viral marketing campaign to the seeds of a deeper mythology planted on message boards. But with hype meters peaking, cautiously optimistic fanboys willing to entertain the notion that a good movie could be released in January sharpened swords for a potential backlash. With apologies to Public Enemy, believe the hype. Cloverfield director Matt Reeves has created an abnormality, a visceral monster movie that doesn't overly concern itself with its actual monster. The filmmaker certainly doesn't go out of his way to show his beast. Not because he doesn't want to, but because he can't. read the full review

A Clockwork Orange: Two-Disc Special Edition - DVD Review
By: Felix Vasquez Jr. - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews
Published on: 11/20/2007 3:54 AM
Stanley Kubrick set forth a zeitgeist upon which all future gang warfare films would be based on. Which is surprising considering A Clockwork Orange is not about gang warfare at all. It's a science fiction thriller about a predator of humanity who gets a taste of his own medicine a hundred fold once he is rehabilitated into a docile animal of society. Alex DeLarge, almost like Scarface, has become a considerable icon for the neo-sixties chic society of pop culture that has embraced his image of a derby, cane, and accentuated lashes. read the full review

The Science of Sleep - DVD
By: Chris Barsanti - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews
Published on: 1/26/2007 9:37 PM
How exactly could such as astoundingly well-crafted and adventurous vision like The Science of Sleep end up the throwaway curiosity that it is? To be sure, there's no lack of effort from writer/director Michel Gondry, ringleader of this particular reality-blurring carnival, who brings to bear all of his singular skills at drawing dreamscapes disturbingly close to the frame of our everyday lives. His well-directed cast fling themselves right into the mix, going at their roles with enthusiastic abandon. read the full review

Shoestring science fiction tries, but ultimately fails. Independent, no-budget cinema is always a gamble. You never really know what you are going to get. Sometimes you get a great story from a creative staff that has vision, and what they lack in money they more than make up for in energy and effort. More often than not, however, what you get can scarcely be called a film; it is something that may have vision, but the execution is so bad as to make it nearly unwatchable. read the full review

Forbidden Planet - 50th Anniversary Edition
By: Rafe Telsch - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews

Every classic movie fan has that one movie that they really favor; something from the classic age that will never be recaptured because "they don't make them like that anymore." As a science fiction fan, for me that film is Forbidden Planet, an outer space story of love and adventure loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest. read the full review

Babylon 5: The Lost Tales - DVD Review
By: Rafe Telsch - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews
Published on: 7/28/2007 10:01 PM
Babylon 5: The Lost Tales is a welcome window back into the lives of the characters we followed for five years, with the feeling of just another episode of the old show, rather than the grandeur or disappointment of a movie length story. It's a chance to revisit with old friends, catch up on where they've gone in ten years, and then the window closes as the credits role. Like all visits with old friends, it's far too short and leaves a strong desire for more time. read the full review

Its been stated many time that 28 Days Later is not a zombie film. For the most part, this is true. The few scares are paced sparingly, and the attacks are brief. Its a sickness, not the living dead. That said, considering where the film ends up, its unquestionably a zombie movie. read the full review

Serenity - DVD Review
By: Chris Barsanti - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews
Published on: 8/10/2007 9:26 PM
Somehow, in the wake of Lucas CGI evisceration of his own work and overblown space operas like The Chronicles of Riddick, somebody still knows how to put together an outer-space romp that trades just as heavily on quips and character as it does on conflict and explosions. All the better, theres barely a movie star in sight. The film in question is Serenity, the by-product of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Joss Whedons sci-fi series Firefly. Somehow, Whedon convinced Universal to pony up about $45 million to make and show Serenity to multiplex audiences, 95 percent of whom will have never seen the original series, which lasted on Fox for only 11 episodes back in 2002. read the full review
