Last year, Christopher Nolan took memory loss to a new level with his masterful thriller Memento, in which the hero tattoos notes on his body to help him cope with his condition. This year, the amnesiac champion of The Bourne Identity uses brains and brawn as a means of sorting out his memory loss. Doug Liman directs Identity with the same degree of creativity as he demonstrated with Swingers and Go, despite some reportedly epic studio and script squabbles. You typically have to maintain low expectations for a comic book movie. For every Spider-Man, you get a bunch of Elektras and Daredevils. So really, what can you expect from one with a huge, B-list cast and three directors? Surprise! Sin City is a mega-violent, highly potent vial of noir crack. And judging from the riotous burst of applause at the end of our screening, one that's destined to be a Matrix-style mass-cult classic. Okay, so Sin City isn't really a comic book movie – it's a graphic novel movie. And in spite of the title, the locale isn't the tourist-friendly and brightly-lit Vegas strip but "Basin City," a noir Nowheresville, a mid-century L.A. with snow flurries and dark sewers, enveloped in permanent midnight. read the full review | |

One of those filmmakers is Spike Lee. When I saw Inside Man back in 2006 on the big screen I was finally able to say that I had seen a Spike Lee film. To this date, it remains the only one I have seen. I know, I know, that means there are a lot of quality movies that I have yet to see, a fact I hope to one day rectify. In any case, the heist film has arrived on Blu-ray and marks the first time I have seen the film since its big screen bow. read the full review | |
